About this work
This series consists of 77 instant photographs produced during the artist's investigative art journey across Ukrainian cities in April 2024. Commonly associated with leisure and pleasant memories, the instant photographic format is here deliberately redirected toward witnessing. The images register urban environments shaped by war, challenging the expectations attached to this familiar medium.
The photographs move between different states of the same places. Some capture sites of active destruction, found artefacts, and traces left immediately after bombardment. Others depict spaces that have already been cleared, repaired, or visually restored, where the violence is no longer immediately visible. This oscillation resists a single narrative of ruin, acknowledging both rupture and the effort to continue daily life.
Working at a small, fixed scale, the images hold destruction and restoration in parallel. Fragments of 2024 approaches the city as an accumulation of partial views rather than a coherent whole, forming a dispersed archive in which absence, recovery, and persistence coexist. The instant photograph becomes a quiet witness, recording not only damage, but the complex afterlife of places marked by war.
