About this work
It Is Happening emerged unintentionally during the development of a larger body of work titled Liberation. What began as residual material – paint left on the palette and unplanned gestures – gradually asserted its own presence, shifting from byproduct to autonomous work.
Using her material-based painting process combining cold wax, linseed oil, and natural ritual pigments, the artist builds a dense yet responsive surface through layering, pressure, and restraint. Kumkum, sindur, and turmeric are not treated symbolically but as active substances, carrying physical weight, saturation, and texture. The surface records an intuitive process in which form develops before meaning is fixed.
Rather than depicting a specific event, the work holds a state of becoming – a moment in which movement, attention, and material resistance align. It Is Happening reflects a commitment to process-led making, where intuition, repetition, and trust in material behaviour allow transformation to unfold without pre-determined outcome.
